An Alaska Bucket-List Birthday Trip: Denver to Anchorage, Seward + the Fishing Trip of a Lifetime

Did my parents take my oldest on an early bucket-list 14th birthday trip to Alaska? Yes.

Did my dad write me this review afterward + did I completely gator tear reading it? Also yes.

Best. (Grand)Parents. Ever.

There is something incredibly special about watching your parents create these kinds of memories with your kids. And getting to be the travel advisor who helped plan it all? That made this one even sweeter.

My parents wanted to give their grandson something bigger than a traditional birthday gift for his 14th birthday: an experience he would remember forever. Alaska had been on the bucket list, and they decided it was time to make it happen.

So we planned a multigenerational Alaska adventure from Denver to Anchorage, followed by one of the most beautiful train rides in the country aboard the Alaska Railroad to Seward, Alaska. The trip included historic accommodations in Anchorage, a waterfront stay in Seward, incredible scenery and, most importantly for this 14-year-old, an unforgettable Alaska fishing charter.

And according to my dad, it delivered.

(Also worth noting: my dad called me “Alicia” in his review, possibly for the first time in my entire life. Who is she?!)

A Multigenerational Alaska Trip to Remember

Here’s what my dad had to say about their Alaska adventure:

Their Alaska vacation started with a nonstop flight from Denver to Anchorage, giving them time to explore and settle in before continuing south.

In Anchorage, they stayed at the Historic Anchorage Hotel, a property filled with character and Alaska history. Originally dating back to the early 1900s, it was a fun way to begin the trip before heading into some of Alaska's most spectacular scenery.

Taking the Alaska Railroad From Anchorage to Seward

Rather than simply driving from Anchorage to Seward, we built the Alaska Railroad into their itinerary—and it ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip.

The train journey between Anchorage and Seward travels along the Turnagain Arm and through incredible Alaska landscapes, with mountains, glaciers, rivers and wildlife outside the windows.

As my dad put it:

“Flying from Denver to Anchorage was smooth, but taking the Alaska Railroad down to Seward was the absolute highlight of our transit—offering jaw-dropping window views for a teenager’s first time in Alaska.”

For families planning an Alaska vacation, especially a multigenerational trip with grandparents and grandchildren, the journey itself can be just as memorable as the destination. The Alaska Railroad was the perfect example of that.

A Waterfront Stay in Seward, Alaska

Once they arrived in Seward, they stayed waterfront at the small boat harbor.

Their room overlooked the marina, giving them a front-row seat to fishing boats coming and going—and even sea otters swimming nearby.

My dad wrote:

“Beautiful waterfront rooms built right over the small boat harbor boardwalk. We sat on our private deck watching sea otters and fishing boats.”

Not a bad way to wake up in Alaska.

But the main event was still ahead.

A Bucket-List Seward, Alaska Fishing Charter

For a kid who loves fishing, this was THE reason for the trip.

They headed out aboard the M/V Sea Quest catamaran with Alaska Northern Outfitters for a full Alaska fishing experience.The boat offered plenty of room, a comfortable ride to the fishing grounds and an upper deck where they could take breaks and soak in the scenery without getting in the way of the action below.

And then they started catching fish.

King salmon.

Silver salmon.

Halibut.

Yelloweye rockfish.

Rockfish.

For a 14-year-old celebrating his birthday with his grandparents in Alaska, it was pretty hard to top.

My dad described the trip as an “absolute home-run 14th birthday memory for our grandson,” with family-friendly service, an excellent crew and expert local guidance throughout the experience.

Mission accomplished.

Why Experiences Make Some of the Best Birthday Gifts

This is exactly why I love planning travel.

A trip like this isn't just about booking flights, hotels or transportation. It's about figuring out how all of those pieces can come together to create an experience that feels personal to the people taking it.

For my parents and my son, that meant flying from Denver to Anchorage, experiencing the Alaska Railroad together, staying along the waterfront in Seward and heading out for the fishing adventure of a lifetime.

Years from now, he probably won't remember what he received for every birthday.

But I have a feeling he'll remember turning 14 and catching halibut and salmon in Alaska with Grandma and Grandpa.

And THAT is pretty special.
